The hardy herbaceous Peony 'Flame' is full of dramaand colour. Each year in late spring (and in early summer in cooler regions), it will produce stunning, eye-catching, large single flowers. The petal colours are hard to describesome authorities call them bright, lustrous flame-red, while others describe them as orange-red, or even magenta with coral undertones! You decide, but each bloom is vivid, with its centre of rich, golden yellow stamens. It is one of the earliest peony cultivars to flower, and is becoming increasingly popular. Growing to some 80cm in height, it has dark green, divided foliage.  

Paeonia lactiflora 'Flame' was bred more than 80 years ago, and the fact that it is still sold means that it is one of the bestit is ideal in beds, borders and patio containers, in full sun or part shade. The stems are sturdy, and well able to hold the magnificent flowers without the need for staking. Oh, and the blooms may be cut for indoor decoration, too.
