Leucojum vernum
Leucojum vernum has similar looks to that of the snowdrop, which often leads to the two being confused. But when you grow Leucojum bulbs yourself you’ll see they’re actually very different. Leucojum vernum are also known as "Spring Snowflake", the pendulous snowy-white open flowers are formed of delicately pointed petals, each tipped with a fresh green dot. Leucojum vernum has all the daintiness of the snowdrop, but it’s much taller and substantial (growing to around 30cm) and flowers later in the spring – normally around March or April.
Leucojum vernum are very easy to grow and flower for many weeks. They’re totally non-fussy and will grow well in most conditions, but they particularly like being in a sunny spot. Each year, they naturalise to produce a bigger and better clump with more flowering stems each time, so once you’ve planted the bulbs you can enjoy their cheerful appearance year after year. The beautiful display Leucojum vernum produces is so pretty and reliable, it has won a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, which is always a good sign that you’re choosing a plant that won’t disappoint!
