Geranium 'Joseph Green'
One of a kind, Geranium 'Joseph Green' is particularly notable for its unusual double blooms—as far as we're aware it's the only Geranium phaeum which flaunts such petal-packed flowers. It maintains the dusky cranesbill colour—a luxurious deep purple—but throws in a zest of zingy lime among its tuft of small inner petals. You can enjoy these geraniums in the shadier, damper areas of the garden because this variety thrives in such conditions, flowering on tall stems which adds interest at a height along with a floaty, swaying motion.
Flowering from early to mid summer, Geranium phaeum 'Joseph Green' will burst into bloom with excellent timing to take over from fading spring tulips. Other plants which flower at around the same time include Allium, Geum and Dicentra, all of which make excellent planting partners in a partially shaded spot. This double cranesbill is a hardy and highly resilient perennial which copes with freezing temperatures in winter as well as summer heat. Plant it in dappled shade for best results, because it prefers to sink its roots into a damp soil.
