Allium 'Arctic Snow'

Allium 'Arctic Snow'

Allium 'Arctic Snow' is a recently introduced allium cultivar—and it is outrageously wonderful! In its make-up, it is quite different from most other kinds. It looks its absolute best in late spring/early summer. Half of its green-centred, white flowers are clasped quite close to the centre. The rest—and the majority—zoom out on long, vibrant pale green stalks, rather like a firework display. It is magnificent, and much more interesting than any run-of-the-mill allium. At maturity, the heads are almost completely spherical. Half the height is in the stem, while half is in the head itself. Silvered, the heads make wonderful indoor dried decorations for Christmas.

This allium is good for beds, borders and containers—but remember that the bulbs of Allium schubertii 'Arctic Snow' are quite large, so beware of planting them too close: to be seen at their best, the flowers need air around them. We recommend planting the bulbs 20-30cm apart. This way, both you—and all the pollinating insects that will come to visit the flowers—will have unhindered views and access.
